The Grace Building’s standout façade has made it a favorite among critics and fans alike, and our building is featured on more than a dozen internet travel and architectural sites from Spain, Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom, and more than a half dozen here at home in New York. But travelers’ commentary aside, the architectural acclaim that began in the early 1970’s continues to this day and has only become enhanced with the passage of time.

Designed by the legendary Gordon Bunshaft, FAIA, who gave form and vigor to the American interpretation of the International School of architectural design, The Grace Building’s gently sloping façade has made it one of Midtown Manhattan’s most recognizable office towers. Set back more than 20 feet from the street line, it creates a grand entrance on 42nd Street and gives one of New York’s busiest intersections a feeling of openness and light unmatched in Midtown. The spacious environment is further enhanced by the recently renovated Grace Plaza, a 25,000-sq.-ft. landscaped open-air plaza adjacent to the building’s Avenue of the Americas façade.

Housing more than 1.5 million square feet on 50 stories (including below-grade levels), the building features a structural system of steel and duranotic aluminum curtainwall/reinforced pre-cast concrete, and a facade of tinted glass, cream travertine and black granite. The travertine piers at the base, interspersed with full-height glass panels, continue the curved lines of the façade while serving as a welcoming portal to the main entrance.

Inside, the lobby is a blend of cream travertine floors, perimeter walls paneled in warm African mahogany, and a central elevator core clad in forest green polished marble from Italy. During the recent renovation, management preserved the lobby’s signature design of broad expanses by unobtrusively situating new security facilities at all points of access.

The lobby security desks feature gently curved bronze and green Italian marble counters, trimmed in black granite; the main desk is accented by architectural halo ceiling lighting. The two curved directory panels are finished in satin bronze, echoing the bronze accents used throughout the lobby and elevator cabs. The lobby also provides access to our retail shops and elevator access to the 188-car parking garage just outside the Plaza entrance.

Grace Plaza offers travertine and wrought iron seating for more than 200 amid an atmosphere of hundreds of flowering plants, trees and seasonal shrubbery, with gentle sunlight reflected by the surrounding glass facades.
